Who doesn’t enjoy a good glass of red wine now and then? And even better, who isn’t dreaming of sunny days in the middle of vineyards enjoying some good food and good company? You might think of Bordeaux or Tuscany first but Austria has some amazing wine (and vineyards) too! I experienced all of that in the in Mittelburgenland, a part of Austria’s easternmost province of Burgenland. The area proudly call itself Sonnenland (sunny land) because the country indeed is spoilt with a high number of sunshine hours which lived up to its name when we got there 😉
At the Hotel Sonnenhof in Lutzmannsburg we had the right starting point for our activities which should include a lot of wine later – so a cozy space for relaxing and recharging was essential! What’s better than a garden full of rabbits (who cares it’s actually for kids when my friend and me fell in love instantly?) and a lovely, crystal-clear swimming pond? It should become one of my favourite places of the entire weekend 😀 Click here to book.
Anyways we weren’t supposed to only lay around as we had some serious wine tasting coming up: Mittelburgenland is particularly known for one grape – the Blaufränkisch – which also gave the area the alternative name Blaufränkischland. At the Blaufränkisch Vertikale, a wine tasting event, we got the chance to try 25 (!) different ones from local and international producers. Don’t worry, we didn’t have to swallow all of them 😛 Although it was hard for me to taste all the different nuances, I at least learned that every wine has its story…
Meanwhile the Rotweinerlebnis Lutzmannsburg had become a huge festival ground for wine lovers from near and far… We finished the evening with – what else – more wine and enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere.
A hearty breakfast helps you refueling your energy quickly after a long night…
After an relaxed morning (luckily no hangovers!) we got introduced into the art of wine making. The family-run Deutschkreutzer Weinmanufaktur gave us an interesting guided tour through their impressive manufacturing facilities and tasting rooms. Highlight: The terrace with a breathtaking view over the hills around Deutschkreutz!
Typical for a wine-related town like Deutschkreutz there is a big wine lounge where you can taste and buy all the fine drops from every winemaker of the region. You can imagine that we didn’t leave with empty hands 😛
We finished our wine tour with a culinary highlight at the Heuriger (a traditional wine tavern) called Schenkhaus Strehn. They served an amazing rosé aperitif and some delicious samples of their menu, as far as possible made of local ingredients and prepared with lots of love! The place truly was a little oasis and a foodie heaven – but as their opening periods are very limited (next time they’re open from 11th to 20th November) – reservations are advisable! We were absolutely delighted ❤

OMG! I love wine tasting. We flew to Napa Valley on my first wine tasting (and last so far) while we can just fly around Europe like the one you’ve been to! It looks fun and exciting. 🙂 I think this will be top of the list when I visit Austria. 🙂 Hahaha.
And I want to join your giveaway! 😀 My favourite way of enjoying a good glass of wine is with my husband overlooking Copenhagen from the peak of our building. Paired with tapas and fresh fruits. 😀
Well thank you for taking part (and being so fast ;)), I really do like the idea of how you’re enjoying wine 😉
Zuerst dachte ich: Blaufränkisch-Land, wo in Deutschland ist denn das? Bis ich beim Weiterlesen draufgekommen bin, das ist gar nicht so weit weg von mir… 🙂
Hahaha, das Gute liegt oft so nah was? 😉 Aber das “fränkisch” kann einen schon etwas verwirren 😛
This sounds like right up my alley…! I can’t believe I’ve yet to go to a vineyard…! This needs to be changed, asap! I wish I could participate in the giveaway, but I definitely enjoy a good glass of wine with some jamon and good friends!!
Too bad that Asia is still lacking famous wines, but they’re trying to catch up – so who knows? 😉 I’m sorry I couldn’t ship it over to S’Pore but if you ever make it to Austria, I’ll get you some good ones 😉
wow, wow, wow! my grandparents are from this area! fantastic report with great images. reminds me of to visit my second home (burgenland) soon again. Thank you!
Really? That’s cool! What a nice second home to have 🙂
What a great give-away! Unfortunately, I’m back in Dubai:/ I must admit that I’ve never really considered Austria a wine country, but with the climate and the location, I’m sure there are some really great wines, yet to be discovered by me:) The food looks really, really good too.
Too bad really 🙁 Yes, the production may not as big as in France or Italy but the quality is equally good! That was a particular red wine area, but overall Austria is a white wine country 😉
Too bad I live in Canada, that sounds like a great giveaway! This sounds like a fun experience, I would like to learn more about wine. By the way, the photo of the bunnies is SO cute, great shot!
Yeah I feel really sorry about that 🙁 But thank you, I think bunnies are just made to be cute 😛
I’ve never been to Austria but after reading your posts about your adventures there I’m always tempted to leave immediately and come there! Unfortunately I can’t now but I’m collecting all your advices for when I’ll have the opportunity to go! This place sounds amazing and perfect for a relaxing long weekend! And the give away is such a great idea, thank you for giving us this opportunity! 😉
Aww thank you Lisa! I really hope you make it to Austria one day because I think you’ll like it 😉
You’ve been to wine heaven apparently! 😀 Nothing’s better than enjoying a glass of wine directly where it comes from – at the vineyard. Unfortunately I’ve only been able to do so once in my life 🙁 but it’s definitely on my to to-do list for next year. haha 😀
Too bad I won’t be in Europe for the next few months so I won’t be able to participate in your give away 😛
Oh that sounds so exciting, where are you heading to? Too bad for the giveaway but I’m happy to hear that your next adventure is coming up 🙂
Excellent post Julia; here in Australia we have many wine growing/tasting regions and one of my favourites is in Western Australia – I lived there for two years so got to see that region and taste the wines on many occasions. The scenery in your wine region is beautiful; grasslands are so green.
Australia has fantastic wines and I’m dreaming about visiting their wine regions! I bet it looks different from here, which makes it even more interesting…
Wow the pictures are beautiful! What camera do you use Sileas?
Thank you Jessica! I’m using a Sony A5100 with the kit lens (16-50 mm) and a 50 mm lens.
this place is sooooo beautiful. you’re life is so charmed xoxo

Thanks a lot Markus 🙂
Great piece. Loved reading it. Blaufränkisch is my favorite red followed by Zweigelt. Supplying the same to Africa. Currently it’s present in Uganda and I just finished a tasting on the same. Enjoy and cheers!
Austrian wine in Uganda? Wow that’s so cool! Thanks for reading and cheers 🙂
