Lucerne and Pilatus – A place made of Swiss dreams

September 29, 2016
Lucerne Pilatus

Oh Lucerne, you enchanting little town in Central Switzerland: Set between the beautiful Vierwaldstättersee and iconic Mount Pilatus – could I ask for a more picturesque setting? I’d be foolish if I did because I hardly think that’s possible.

May I introduce you Lucerne’s most famous landmarks: The wooden bridge Kapellbrücke with its water tower and Mount Pilatus in the background…

During a stroll through town you’ll encounter some grand buildings and lovely decorated houses too…

Due to the lack of time and equipment (and for the sake of convenience) we took the world’s steepest cogwheel train from Alpnachstad to the top of Mount Pilatus. However on that beautiful Sunday a bunch of people had the same idea, so we waited two hours to get an assigned train. Once in, it only takes 40 minutes to the mountain station (vs. 4+ hours steep hike) and with every meter the train climbed up, the views became more spectacular. After all, the wait was absolutely worth it!

The mountain station actually was a huge platform that offers a hotel, restaurants, cafés and sun decks and of course there were lots and lots of people. Most of them enjoyed the views and the sun while others took off on their paraglides.

Through the clouds we could even get a glimpse of the closest glaciers!

And there’s always someone (if not me) that is looking for the perfect photo – no risk, no fun eh? 😉

The cable car took us back to Kriens/Luzern from where it’s only a short bus ride to the centre of Lucerne. Thumbs up to the great accessibility!

Back in town we admired the impressive Kapellbrücke again in the evening sun. Lucerne, it was my third time with you but this time you gained a place in my heart forever. I shall be back soon ❤

Btw, we took the Silver Round Trip that combines train, cogwheel train, cable car and bus in one ticket. There’s also a slightly more expensive Golden Round Trip that goes to Alpnachstad by boat instead of the train.

I hope you enjoyed the visual journey – thanks for reading 😉

Wow! It’s really breathtaking! If I had something like that on my doorstep (or a short train ride/ plane ride away) I think I would be spending much more time outdoors. Must be really amazing during the winter too.

Gorgeous photos! I’d love to visit this place. Esp. love the pic with the white church all by itself — is is a church I think — surrounded by green.

Thanks Marissa! I agree, that little church looks pretty spectacular!

What time of year did you go? We are going in October and I’m hoping St. Pilatus won’t be so busy.
